The Agri-Campsite takes its suggestive name from the Sabea Tower, also known as the Tower of Spea Point. It belongs to the defence system built along the South Apulian coast between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to counter the threat of Saracen pirates.
The tower, situated to the north of Gallipoli, 500 metres from the campsite, became a military stronghold in 1570, to watch over the stretch of sea before it and to warn of the approach of foreign ships. In the sixteenth century, a period that suffered from numerous pirate attacks, the coastal towers were manned by troops of soldiers trained to face the danger. Among those charged with defending the Old Tower there was a handsome young man named Flavio, who fell in love with and married Florilanda, a young, curvaceous and beautiful woman from Gallipoli of poor origins. On Whitsun day, the young bride, ardently desiring to see, be it only for a moment, her beloved husband on guard in the Old Tower, arrived with her companions, where she met her husband with a passionate embrace.
Their lovemaking knew neither space nor time, and Florilanda’s companions’ pleas for her to come went unheard, and they began their way back as night fell. When Florilanda awoke from her deep dream of love, took leave of her husband and wished to return to the city, the thick shadows of the night had fallen over the rocky cliffs causing her to lose her way. She decided to return to Flavio, but he, suspicion aroused by the strange sounds and believing they came from an enemy, ran against her, not recognising her form cloaked in black night, and stabbed her with his halberd. Immediately realising his tragic mistake, he laid the lifeless body of his beloved young wife on a boat and together they disappeared towards the horizon, never to return.
People still say that every night two white seagulls take shelter in the haven of the Old Tower only to fly away at dawn towards the infinite sea wrapped in a mutual and eternal destiny of love.
